Synopsis: Hurt, never forgiven; love, never forgotten.
Middle-aged dentist, Dr. Jeffrey Chan, has never forgiven the Lew family, his family’s landlords in Chinatown, for their humiliating treatment due his family’s poverty, especially by Billy, Landlord Lew’s son. While Dr. Chan has moved to the modern suburbs, it galls him that his widowed mother refuses to leave the old, decrepit building and even more infuriating, the widowed Landlord Lew is trying to start a relationship with her.
Dr. Chan sees his chance for revenge when Billy surprisingly wants to make him a partner in re-developing the old Chinatown building. Secretly, planning a double cross, his plans tumble apart, when his mother suffers a heart attack. It turns out Mrs. Chan has secrets of her own and there are deep, long-hidden reasons as to why she finds it so hard to say goodbye to Chinatown.
Director's Statement:
Goodbye Chinatown will be a film that speaks to the heart. No special effects, no fantastic stunts, just the heart-wrenching story of love and hurt. Love hidden for sixty years, hurt hidden for a lifetime. This film will combine Chinese and Western sensibilities, traditional and contemporary settings and show that love and honor still have a place today, no matter how difficult it may seem. To make a film of significance, my role is to help the actors to fully express the human drama.
